A $5.5 million renovation project was approved to remodel the locker rooms of Harvard High School and to add a second floor above the locker rooms for a multi-purpose room that would give students another fitness training space.

The Harvard School District 50 board approved the project at their September board meeting, according to a news release sent out last week.

“The board recognizes the positive impact that athletics and sports participation have on our students," Board President Julie Lehman said in the release. "The locker rooms currently at the high school are not adequately meeting the needs to grow and foster more opportunities for student participation."

The project is set to begin in March 2021 and is expected to be completed by December, according to the release.

The cost of the renovation will be covered by "internal fund balances," according to the release. The district has been monitoring its funds closely in this time and has decided to move forward with the project.

This funding will allow the school's locker rooms to be updated and will also support the creation of another much-needed space for fitness training and athletic programming for students, Harvard High School Athletic Director Andrew Walters said.

“This renovation will bring our facilities up to standard and create equity across all groups," Walters said in the release. “All lockers will be able to be housed in a single location off of our main competition floor and we will be able to add space for fitness-based training.”
