Ottawa family welcomes second consecutive set of twins

Two is company and three’s a crowd, but for Greg and Katie Clodfelter of Ottawa, four was certainly their lucky number.

At the beginning of the month the couple welcomed their second consecutive set of twins to their family.

The Clodfelters now have their hands full with four children all younger than 2 1/2 after fraternal twin girls Lucy and Scarlett joined their fraternal older brothers Maverick and Lincoln.

While twins occur in roughly 1 of 250 pregnancies, the odds of a couple having two sets of twins jumps to around 1 of 3,000 pregnancies. The Clodfelters mentioned they went out and bought a lottery ticket after finding out their luck, but unfortunately came up empty.

When they found out they were expecting a second set of twins, Katie said she may have been a little more ecstatic about having two upcoming babies than her husband.

“I was super excited,” Katie said. “I always wanted four kids and (Greg) only wanted two so when we started dating we decided to compromise on three, so it kind of worked out in my favor.”

Katie said she was more shocked to hear they were expecting girls than another set of twins as she thought she was going to have four boys.

Katie went on to say twins run in her side of the family as her grandmother had twin brothers as well as a set of twin boys herself.

With most new parents, rest or the lack thereof, has been an issue since the birth of Lucy and Scarlett, but Katie said it has been easier leaning on their past experiences with two babies at a time.

“We’re doing good, sleep is better than it was the first time,” Katie said. “I think it’s easier the second time around so we are doing pretty good.”

Katie also said the help of her husband, who will have the next 8 weeks home from work, has been invaluable in getting the kids on schedule and making sure everyone around the house gets enough attention.

“(Greg’s) more of a night person, and I’m more of a morning person so it’s been working out pretty nice so far,” Katie said. “He’s been doing the majority with the boys since I’ve been recovering.”

While caring for their children in shifts, the Clodfelters are excited about the newest additions to their family even if it means double the diapers.
