Romeoville OK's improvements along Route 53, Normantown Road

The village of Romeoville announced the approval of two improvement projects along Route 53 on the village's east side.

The village board of trustees approved new sidewalks running from Phelps Avenue to Ridgewood Avenue on the east side of Route 53, according to a news release.

On the west side of the road, new sidewalks will be added from Phelps Avenue to Normantown Road.

The segments of new sidewalk on both sides of Route 53 will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and provide a safe way for pedestrians to walk along the road.

In addition, the first phase of the crosswalk on Route 53 will be completed, going east to west parallel to Normantown Road. Future Illinois Department of Transportation improvements will include cross walk signals.

The village will also address a 2,000-foot gap in street lighting on Normantown Road with nine new streetlights. Village officials accepted a proposal to erect the lights between Geneva Avenue and Beverly Skoff Elementary School.

"These two projects will improve roadway and pedestrian safety where needed," Romeoville Mayor John Noak said in the release. "We continue to look at other ways to improve safety throughout the community."
