Lightfoot not optimistic fans will return to Soldier Field, Bears say they've been cooperative

Fans tailgate outside Soldier Field before a game on Sept. 5. The Bears announced Friday that season tickets will not be available in 2020 due to the pandemic. Single game tickets, if fans are allowed in the stadium, will be sold exclusively to season ticket holders.

The Bears made it clear Friday that they are working with the Mayor’s office to bring fans back to Soldier Field.

The Bears have had “weekly communication” with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office on a variety of topics, the team said in a statement Friday, including the potential for fans to return at Soldier Field.

During a news conference earlier in the day Friday, Lightfoot said that all sports teams need to cooperate with her office.

“Not just say things in the media,” Lightfoot said.

Lightfoot went on to say that returning fans to Soldier Field is a “complicated exercise.”

The Bears put out a statement in the late afternoon, indicating that they have been working with the Mayor’s office.

“In mid-August we reviewed a detailed plan with city and public health officials to assess the feasibility of allowing a limited number of fans to attend Bears games,” the team said in a statement. “The plan was the result of weeks of collaboration among the Bears, ASM Global, the Chicago Park District and health experts. It addresses City, State and NFL guidelines to ensure a safe environment for everyone inside the stadium. After the review, all parties agreed the timing to welcome fans was not right given the current health metrics.”

Soldier Field will not have fans in the stands for the immediate future, including during the home opener on Sunday afternoon.
