19-year-old cited in I-55 crash that injured Illinois State Police trooper: cops

A 19-year-old was cited for violating Scott’s Law and another traffic law in connection with a crash on Interstate 55 that caused serious injuries to an Illinois State Police trooper.

Alexis Magallanes, of Berwyn was cited for the Scott’s Law violation and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to the Illinois State Police.

Magallanes was the driver of a 2003 white Toyota pickup truck that struck a trooper’s squad car on Wednesday, police said.

The trooper was seated in his squad car with emergency lights activated and blocking traffic for a commercial motor vehicle stalled ahead in the left lane of I-55 at milepost 257.5 south of Route 30, police said.

“The pickup truck vehicle failed to yield to the authorized emergency vehicle and struck the rear of the trooper’s squad car,” police said.

A third vehicle, a 2016 white Ford Econoline van, was traveling in the same location and struck both the pickup truck and the squad car, police said.

“This impact then caused the squad car to be pushed into the left concrete median barrier before it came to rest in the left lane,” police said.

The Ford van came to rest in the right ditch, police said. The driver’s side of the squad car was then struck by yet another vehicle, a 2011 blue Subaru SUV, as it attempted to avoid the crash, police said.

The trooper suffered serious injuries that were not life threatening, police said.

Magallanes suffered serious injuries and the driver of the Ford van had injuries that were not life threatening, police said.

All three were hospitalized.
