A vehicle on Interstate 55 near Route 30 in the Joliet area crashed into a Illinois State Police squad car and the trooper was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, police said.
About 1:24 p.m. Wednesday, troopers with Illinois State Police District 5 responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle traffic crash with injuries, according to Trooper Genelle Jones.
Preliminary reports indicate an ISP squad car was stationary with emergency lights activated in the left lane in the northbound direction of I-55, south of Route 30, while assisting a stalled motorist, Jones said.
“A vehicle traveling northbound at the same location rear-ended the ISP squad car causing a multi-vehicle traffic crash,” Jones said.
The trooper was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, Jones said. The drivers of two additional vehicles were also hospitalized for injuries that were not life threatening, she said.
The northbound lanes of I-55 at the scene of the crash were closed for about three hours, Jones said. All lanes were open as of late Wednesday afternoon.
