DIXON – The new disc golf course in Page Park is coming to fruition.

In the spring, the Dixon Disc Golf group, which brought a 9-hole course to Lowell Park about 2 years ago, approached the Dixon Park District about establishing a new course in Page Park.

They received the district's blessing to start fundraising and were able to gather enough sponsors within 6 weeks to cover the cost of equipment.

"While we intend on expanding the 9-hole Lowell Park course to a full 18, we thought it would be very beneficial, especially to kids, to have a course that's easier to access," said Nora Balayti, one of the founders of Dixon Disc Golf. "The main intention for this course was to not only provide a safe, fun and inexpensive activity in the center of town but also to build a layout that would educate and challenge a player of any skill level to think critically about their shot-shape."

The group gathered volunteers and cleared some trails and debris for the course, and they will likely have the course completed this week.

"We really wanted to leave the park as natural as possible, which meant only taking down trees that were dead and repurposing any foliage to make paths," she said. "We even built a basket back-drop wall out of branches that were scattered about."

The Page Park course will be 9 holes.

"They are mostly short holes that any player can par, but they're technical so the player has to think about which disc works best and which direction or "line" to take," Balayti said.

The game is similar to golf, with flying discs replacing golf balls and elevated metal baskets instead of holes. It's also grown in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic because it can be played without breaking social-distancing guidelines.

Dixon Disc Golf and the Dixon Park District are working together to put on an official grand opening at 4 p.m. Oct. 2 including games and give-aways, as well as a basic Intro to Disc Golf 101. Find Dixon Disc Golf on Facebook for updates and more information.
