Woodstock North High School senior Jason Thurow was named a semifinalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship program this week.
Thurow, 17, is a member of the varsity band and has been involved in school theater productions, as well as the National Honor Society, Academic Challenge Team and other groups, according to a news release.
Thurow was selected among about 16,000 high school seniors across the country in the National Merit Scholarship program’s 66th year.
“Jason is an outstanding person who continues to amaze me with his skills,” Woodstock North Principal Darlea Livengood said in the release. “He is a caring and thoughtful individual who deserves this recognition.”
Students are competing for about 7,600 scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be available next spring.
Thurow has not yet decided on a university, but he plans to major in physics.
