Cubs swing 3 deals at Monday's trade deadline

The Cubs added three players before MLB’s trade deadline struck Monday.

They acquired Detroit outfielder Cameron Maybin and two left-handed pitchers, Andrew Chafin from Arizona and Josh Osich from Boston.

The Cubs sent infield prospect Zack Short to the Tigers. The deals with Arizona and Boston involve either cash or a player to be named later.

These three players will join designated hitter Jose Martinez, who arrived Sunday in a trade with Tampa Bay.

To make room on the roster, infielder Hernan Perez and outfielder Ian Miller were designated for assignment.

Maybin, 33, was traded by the Tigers for the third time in his career. He was batting .244 in limited action for Detroit this season.

Osich, 31, played for the White Sox last year. He had a 5.74 ERA in 15 innings for the Red Sox this season.

Chafin, 30, had spent his entire career with the Diamondbacks. He sported an 8.10 ERA this season, but it’s 3.76 over his seven years in the majors.

The Cubs were lacking left-handed arms in the bullpen, with only Kyle Ryan available now that it seems likely Jose Quintana will replace the injured Tyler Chatwood in the starting rotation.

The Cubs also signed former Marlins closer A.J. Ramos, a right-hander, and sent him to South Bend. Ramos hasn't pitched in the majors since 2018 due to a torn labrum.
Short was a 17th-round pick of the Cubs in 2016 out of Sacred Heart University. He played at both Triple A Iowa and Double A Tennessee last year.

In other news, Mike Borzello, the Cubs’ associate coach for pitching, catching and strategy, was given a one-game suspension for his actions in Saturday’s game against Cincinnati.

Reds outfielder Jesse Winker and manager David Bell also were suspended one game as benches cleared briefly. Reds first baseman Joey Votto received an undisclosed fine for leaving the bench and contributing to the incitement.

Cubs manager David Ross was thrown out of the game but was not suspended.
