Waubonsee Community College furloughs 36 employees

Waubonsee Community College has made changes in its workforce by furloughing 36 employees.

Employees were notified on Monday about the furloughs, which were pending approval by the college’s board of trustees at its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday. The furloughs will take effect Aug. 31.

Because the number of in-person courses being offered in the fall term is less than 20% of the college’s total fall offerings, some functions and jobs that involve students and members of the community coming to the college’s campuses cannot be continued in the coming semester. Also, declining enrollment has created revenue uncertainty and the need for workforce realignment. These furloughs help to ensure that the college remains focused on protecting its continued financial strength.

“These employees have been an important part of Waubonsee and have served the college in a variety of ways for various lengths of time. We honor them, thank them, and recognize them for their service to our college community,” said Dr. Christine Sobek, President of Waubonsee Community College, in a communication to all employees on Monday.
