The Illinois Veterans Home in La Salle is awaiting the results of 174 pending coronavirus tests, which include 136 residents, said a state official Friday.

Two employees have tested positive for COVID-19.

Since then, all staff and residents have been tested, with 171 staff tests back, and all negative so far, said Evan Fazio, public information officer for the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Illinois Veterans Home in La Salle was one of five long-term care facilities to appear in the Illinois Department of Public Health's report Friday. The other facilities are Heritage Health Mendota, La Salle County Nursing Home, Ottawa Pavilion and Streator Unlimited. Facilities appearing on this report may have staff or residents affected. Residents do not have to test positive to appear on this report.

All staff and residents are tested weekly at the Veterans Home. The facility is following health department guidelines regarding any necessary quarantines in reaction to the positive cases.

Throughout the pandemic, the veterans home has followed safeguards, said Angela Mehlbrech in a letter to residents and families of the veterans home.

She said health screenings of staff and residents, maintaining social distancing practices, wearing face coverings, using gloves and gowns when indicated, and intensified cleaning and disinfection protocols, are among the facility's practices.

"Residents continue to be encouraged to stay in their rooms to minimize movement within the facility," Mehlbrech said. "We are grateful to our team for remaining highly vigilant for signs or symptoms of COVID-19 and for responding swiftly, appropriately, and professionally to any potential cases."
