The driver of a Pontiac Vibe crashed into a wall outside Milano Bakery in Joliet when her brakes apparently failed and she drove straight across traffic lanes, according to police.
Shortly after 7 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to the scene of the incident for a vehicle that “struck the wall” of the bakery at 427 S. Chicago St., according to Joliet police Lt. Christopher Botzum.
Officers were able to determine that Daiaha Watkins, 21, of Willowbrook, the driver of the Vibe, exited the parking lot across the street, he said.
Watkins indicated that the brakes of her vehicle failed and “she drove straight across lanes of traffic into the building across the street, causing damage,” Botzum said.
Watkins was issued several citations, he said. Watkins and a passenger in the vehicle declined medical treatment at the scene, he said.
Botzum said the cost of the damage was unknown. A section of the wall near the bakery entrance facing Chicago Street was boarded up.
The bakery is run by Mario DeBenedetti III and his brother Darin DeBenedetti, according to the company’s website.
