BATAVIA – The sport of kings will adopt a sweet theme for this summer's benefit polo tournament from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, by the Blackberry Polo Club to support the Batavia Arts Council and Shakespeare at the Centre.
"Our summer theme is 'Sweets to the Sweets,' a super sweet event – plan your tailgate display and feast around our theme – be creative," announce organizers. "Candy is sweet, and so is Shakespeare's language. You can go full on Candyland or Willy Wonka, Candy Crush, or Shakespeare in Love."
There will be social distancing between the tailgating parties, and less "social" travelers strolling the walkway. Planned are prize raffle baskets.
"Please plan to bring your family outside, to relax, picnic, polo," states the website. Some of our usual activities may be sidelined … but the game, the atmosphere, the relaxation and the fun will all remain."
Julane Sullivan, president of the Batavia Arts Council, always credits the hosting couple of the long-running event, Barb and George Alexander. The polo club playing at their farm is a member of the U.S. Polo Association.
The two team sponsors are Batavia Bulldog Plumbing and A Mirror Image.
