80% of Geneva D-304 parents pick hybrid in-person learning for new school year

Students to be divided by alphabet for half in-class, half at home instruction

GENEVA  – About 80% of Geneva District 304 parents selected the in-person learning hybrid option for the 2020-21 school year, Superintendent Kent Mutchler stated in an email.

District parents had until the end of July 28 to choose whether they wanted the hybrid learning option, which involves students attending school two to three times a week, divided up by their last names, or remote learning only.

About 20% of parents decided on remote learning only and no in-person classes.

The district set up the hybrid learning plan and remote-only choices in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Students with last names from A to K will attend Monday, Wednesday and alternating Fridays and students with last names from L to Z will attend Tuesday, Thursday and alternating Fridays.

Officials have said there would be daily lessons and activities for students, whether in class or remote. School starts Aug. 19 in Geneva District 304.

“In order to develop teams of both in-person and online-learning teaching staff, we are analyzing the class sizes and working to collapse sections where possible at the elementary, middle and high school levels,” Mutchler stated in the email.

“Some staff members may be reassigned to different roles or take on additional responsibilities, and we may need to hire a limited number of additional teachers,” Mutchler’s email stated.

“Our administrators have been working extremely hard to make these preparations, along with the countless other considerations, to provide quality educational experiences to students in both settings,” Mutchler’s email stated.

While the combination of the in-person A/B model and the online-only model will mean a significant reduction in the amount of people in the buildings on any given day, the district plans to maintain the same staffing level in the maintenance and custodial department, his email stated.

The district will implement new, focused procedures for maintaining a safe and healthy environment, Mutchler’s email stated.
