Hacker attempts $10K credit card charge

St. Charles Twp. man alerted to fraud

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A resident of the 36W800 block of Red Gate Court, St. Charles Township, reported March 10, that someone tried to charge $10,000 to his credit card, but was unsuccessful, according to sheriff’s reports.

The resident told deputies that someone ported his cell phone number, prompting a text from his carrier that his password and pin were changed, according to the report.

When he called the cell phone company, he was told his account did not exist. The man eventually resolved the cell phone issue, according to sheriff’s reports, only to hear from his bank about the unsuccessful attempt to charge $10,000.

He told police he had received calls from people asking him to verify his information – such as his social security number – and that his social media accounts may have been hacked.

Deputies advised him to change his passwords and monitor his personal information, the report stated.
