A 24-year-old McHenry man who barricaded himself in a Crystal Lake apartment Friday night is facing multiple felony charges, including predatory criminal sexual assault and child pornography offenses, after being apprehended.

Crystal Lake police had been dispatched to the 500 block of Darlington Lane about 4:30 p.m. Friday over a report of a burglary in process.

When officers arrived, they discovered Matthew R. Reder, who police said had barricaded himself into the bathroom of a residence and began threatening officers with a knife.

Authorities set up a perimeter around the area as officers tried to negotiate with Reder and deescalate the situation.

Additional departments also were called to assist with the incident, including Cary, Algonquin Lake in the Hills and Oakwood Hills. SWAT team members from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System also were present on Darlington Lane.

Although a number of squad cars, firetrucks and ambulances were lining Darlington Lane, South Virginia Road still was open to motorists throughout the ordeal.

After several hours of negotiations, Reder surrendered to police without incident. He initially was taken into custody on two active arrest warrants, one from McHenry County and one from DuPage County, according to a news release from the Crystal Lake Police Department.

Crystal Lake police said there was no danger to the public and there were no injuries as a result of the incident. All officers left Darlington Lane about 8 p.m. Friday.

Reder is charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim younger than age 13, a Class X felony; two counts of production of child pornography, a Class X felony; two counts of possession of child pornography, a Class X felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony and Class A misdemeanor charges of aggravated assault, obstructing a peace officer, criminal trespass to a residence and criminal damage to property.

Each Class X felony is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

Reder was transported to McHenry County Jail to await a bond hearing.
