After DeKalb County residents have stood in line for Black Friday sales, shopped downtown main streets for Small Business Saturday and stuffed their online shopping carts for Cyber Monday deals, county nonprofit organizations are asking residents to turn a little cash into charity for Giving Tuesday.

Part of a global campaign created in 2012, Giving Tuesday kicks off at midnight Tuesday and is a movement meant to encourage people to transform their own communities during the holiday giving season. County's residents have already proved their generosity, said Ben Bingle, director of the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership with the DeKalb County Community Foundation. He oversees the annual DeKalb County Giving Day in May, which this year raised more than $749,000 for more than 100 nonprofits.

Bingle said that while the foundation doesn’t run a specific campaign for Giving Tuesday, there are plenty nonprofits in need of extra support.

“Giving Tuesday is a fantastic opportunity for donors to learn about nonprofit organizations and give back,” Bingle said. “In addition, there’s going to be a lot of activity on social media, so that’s one way for donors to learn who’s participating or how to contact organizations.”

The one-stop-shop website for Giving Tuesday www.givingtuesday.org allows users to search for participating organizations as a region or under categories such as causes or issue-based coalitions. #ILGive is the hashtag for the state, and while there isn't a page for DeKalb County, residents can search for local chapters of national groups they wish to support.

Bingle said the best way to find out how to support local nonprofits is to visit their individual websites. Although they may not be running a Giving Tuesday campaign specifically, there is always a donate button or sign-up sheet for those interested in volunteering.

“Nonprofit organizations throughout DeKalb County help make our communities better places to live, work and play,” Bingle said. “Through Giving Tuesday and other donation opportunities, that’s a way for you to support these organizations that do so much work to enhance the quality of life.”
