Rockford man charged Thursday with drug-induced homicide

SYCAMORE – A Rockford man who prosecutors say sold fentanyl to a woman who later died from an overdose was released from jail Thursday after posting $20,000 bail.

Michael A. Greer, 39, of the 6700 block of Academy Trail, is charged with drug-induced homicide in connection with the death of Elaina Bray, a 27-year-old mother of two.

If convicted, Greer would face six to
30 years in prison.

According to court records, Bray asked a family member April 29 to make a trip to Rockford to buy heroin and fentanyl. The family member made a phone call to Greer and later identified him in a lineup, according to court records.

The woman met Greer in the parking lot of a Dollar Tree store at 3818 W. Riverside Blvd., Rockford, where she paid Greer about $120 for some white powder that she put in a cellophane wrapper from a pack of cigarettes, according to court records. Search warrants reveal both Greer and the relative’s phones were at that location at the time, according to court documents.

The family member later gave Bray about a gram of the powder, according to court records. Bray was scheduled to begin serving a sentence at the DeKalb County jail May 3 and she said wanted to have “one last hurrah,” according to court documents.

About 4 p.m. May 2, DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 29900 block of Oak Meadow Drive in Kingston for a report of an overdose. Bray was found dead in a basement bedroom, along with hypodermic needles, a cut length of straw and a small amount of fentanyl powder, according to court documents.

An arrest warrant with a $200,000 bond was issued for Greer on Nov. 1, according to court documents. DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies arrested him Thursday, and he posted $20,000 cash to be released.

He is next due in 9 a.m. Nov. 20.
