Barrington man charged with LSD, ketamine, Ecstasy possession

A 20-year-old Barrington man accused of possessing Ecstasy, LSD and ketamine remained at the McHenry County Jail on Friday afternoon.

Griffin Newcomb, of the 100 block of Buoy Court, is charged with possession with intent to deliver LSD, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of LSD and possession of a controlled substance. The most serious charge, possession with intent to deliver LSD, is a Class X felony typically punishable by as many as 30 years in prison.

Newcomb is accused of possessing 68 doses of LSD, 2 grams of ketamine and 2 grams of Ecstasy on Thursday, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Crystal Lake Police Department. Ketamine is a short-acting anesthetic with hallucinogenic effects, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The officer who handled the report was out of the office Friday. It was not clear how police came into contact with Newcomb or what an estimated street value of the drugs might be.

Newcomb’s bond is set at $75,000, meaning he would need to post $7,500 bail to be released.

During a brief hearing Friday morning at the McHenry County Jail, Judge Tiffany Davis appointed the public defender’s office to represent Newcomb on the charges.

Newcomb has a limited criminal history in McHenry County. In May, he accepted an offer from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, records show. He was sentenced to one year of court supervision.

Newcomb’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 1.
