Longtime Joliet pastor accepts call in Oregon

Rev. Karl Hess, pastor of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, has accepted a call to serve at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Redmond, Oregon.

His final service will be 9 a.m. Sept. 1 at the church, located at 310 N. Broadway St. in Joliet, Following the service, the church will host a fellowship gathering to greet him, his wife Angela and son Joseph.

Refreshments will be served and the community is invited.

Hess first served as a vicar at St. Peter in the fall of 2004 and returned to Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana August 2005 for his final year. Upon his completion at seminary, St. Peter extended a call to him.

On July 30, 2006 Hess was ordained at St. Peter and installed as the associate pastor serving with Rev. Lee Jany, senior pastor until Jany’s retirement on June 24, 2007.

In a 2017 Herald-News story, Hess reaffirmed the 160-year-old church's commitment to the area.

"We don't have plans to pack up and go someplace else," Hess said in the story. "I think most people at St. Peter see our mission and our place as being where we are close to downtown Joliet. If you're getting funding from a denominational organization, it's a little bit easier, but we're not. Still, this is where most people see our home."
