2019 Northwest Herald Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year: Huntley's Daryn Davis

Image 1 of 3

Huntley’s Daryn Davis’ results were pretty much the same in every meet she competed in this spring.

Davis usually won the triple jump, long jump and 100-meter high hurdles. She did it at the McHenry County Meet and again at the Fox Valley Conference Meet. At the Class 3A Lake Zurich Sectional, she qualified for state in all three events, winning the triple jump and high hurdles.

The Red Raiders’ junior capped her season by taking fifth place at state in the 3A triple jump, going 38-3 1/4, grabbing the second state medal of her high school career.

Davis, who helped the Raiders to team titles in the county and conference meets, was selected by the sports staff as the 2019 Northwest Herald Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Davis set the FVC Meet triple jump record at 38-1, a mark formerly held by her friend and rival Natasha Schaffer of Prairie Ridge.

Davis answers some questions from Northwest Herald sports writer Joe Stevenson about sports fashion, her biggest fear and Disney princesses.

What sport that you don’t play would you be good at?

Davis: I'm not really a big fan of playing contact sports, but swimming and bowling are pretty tough, so probably volleyball.

What is your favorite kind of ice cream?

Davis: Without a doubt, cookies and cream.

What is your best hidden talent?

Davis: That's a tough one … my dancing isn't too bad though.

What is your favorite class in school?

Davis: Calculus was my favorite class last year, so I guess math in general.

What is your best sports fashion advice?

Davis: Never cross brand (i.e. Under Armour shirt with Nike shorts) unless times get really bad.

What scares you?

Davis: Getting caught in a fire is definitely my biggest fear.

If you could spend a day with anyone from history, who would it be?

Davis: Will Smith, because he's really funny and seems like a cool person to be around.

Who is your favorite professional sports team?

Davis: The Washington Redskins or Washington Nationals.

What song on your playlist would surprise people?

Davis: Probably the abundance of Chris Brown music.

What is your soap opera name (your middle name with the street you live on)?

Davis: Alaia Santa Fe.

What do you consider must-see TV?

Davis: "Law and Order: SVU" and "The Carbonaro Effect."

Who was your favorite Disney princess?

Davis: Tiana, from "Princess and the Frog." Instead of just wishing for things to happen, like Cinderella and other princesses, she works hard to make her wishes come true.

What are three of your favorite sports movies?

Davis: "Love and Basketball," "Like Mike" and "Stick It."

Which of your teammates really inspires you?

Davis: Ola Oladipo always inspired me because she never complained about a workout and always went full-out.

Do you have a “Hey-Hey Huntley” T-shirt?

Davis: Unfortunately, no.
