Keep yourself – and your kids – entertained while on vacation. We’ve got so many items you can check out and enjoy while traveling, including books, movies and audiobooks. For youth, we have S.T.E.A.M. Kits with science, technology, engineering, art and math projects; Early Literacy Kits with plenty of activities for pre-readers; and Launchpads, which are preloaded with educational games that engage your kids. See what’s available at gpld.org.

It’s not too late to sign up for our annual communitywide Summer Challenge, which runs through Aug. 7. It’s open to adults, teens and youth, with prizes available at every reading level.

New library update

Exterior walls are getting insulation as construction continues on the new Geneva Public Library at 227 S. Seventh St. Once this phase is complete, crews will add terracotta to the exterior. The prospective opening date is fall 2019. Keep up with progress at gpldnewbuilding.org.

Library closed July 4

We will be closed Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day.

The librarian recommends

Library assistant Madi Jefferies recommends “The One Hundred Nights of Hero” by Isabel Greenberg. “This graphic novel tells an alternative version of ‘The Arabian Nights’ with a tongue-in-cheek feminist twist. Greenberg takes readers on a visual journey through the stories of Hero, teaching lessons of love, betrayal, loyalty and madness,” Jefferies says.

Paula Krapf is public relations and marketing manager for Geneva Public Library. The “Beyond the Bookshelves” column runs the third Thursday of each month. Feedback can be sent to editorial@kcchronicle.com.
