Joliet West Multicultural Club and Fearless Females meet author Angie Thomas

Joliet West High School’s Multicultural and Fearless Females Clubs took students for a conversation, Q&A, and book signing with Angie Thomas, the author of "The Hate U Give," in Naperville on February 8, 2019.

After the Q&A, guests of the event watched the film version of "The Hate U Give."

"The Hate U Give" was one of the seven book options of the 2018 JTHS Summer Reading Program. It tells the story of 16-year-old Starr Carter who becomes the center of a national controversy when she witnesses the murder of her childhood best friend.

The goal of the summer reading program is to encourage students to read for pleasure. Each of these engaging and highly relevant reads also represents one of the “7 Words Make a Difference” JTHS character attributes.

Joliet West’s Multi-Cultural Club, sponsored by Cassie Crim, is an organization whose mission is to ensure that all students, no matter their cultural background, have all of the tools that are needed to be successful in high school and beyond.

West students interested in joining may attend weekly Wednesday meetings in room E146.

Joliet West’s Fearless Females is a club whose mission is to empower young ladies through sisterhood, mentorship, leadership and service opportunities.

The club is sponsored by Crim, Jamila Cage, and Sharralyn Martin. West students interested in joining may attend meetings in room E146 held every other Thursday.
