Sandwich sex offender jailed after cops learn he has a new car

Police say Caudle failed to meet requirement to add vehicle to offender registry

SYCAMORE – A registered sex offender from Sandwich was is DeKalb County jail on Friday after police say he failed to report a new car purchase.

Barry L. Caudle, 46, of the 2500 block of Somonauk Road in Sandwich, was charged with a failure to register a new vehicle in accordance with Child Sex Offender Registration Act. If convicted, he could face probation or 2 to 5 years in prison.

According to DeKalb County court records, Caudle purchased a vehicle described as a 2007 Ford on March 7 and didn't register the vehicle on the Illinois sex offender registry within three days as required by law. Those charges were brought up against him on Monday, records show.

In 2011, Caudle pleaded guilty in Rock Island County to charges of indecent solicitation of a child on the internet, grooming, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and manufacturing harmful material with a web cam, according to Rock Island County court records. He served 180 days in jail for the charges and was discharged from his probation in October 2014, records show.

According to the Illinois Sex Offender Registry, the victim was 14 years old and Caudle was 39 at the time. DeKalb County court records said Caudle last registered as a sex offender June 21, 2018.

DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery set bond for Caudle at $5,000 on Friday; he must post $500 bail to be released. Caudle has not posted bail as of Friday afternoon.

He is due back in court at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
