Applications available for open Harvard City Council seats

With no one running for the open 3rd and 4th Ward seats on the Harvard City Council, city staff are accepting applications to fill these vacancies.

Appointees would serve for two years beginning in May until April 30, 2021. Those officials then may consider running again in the 2021 consolidated election to carry out a full four-year term.

“It’s unfortunate that no one has stepped up to run for the seats up for election in our 3rd and 4th Wards,” Harvard Mayor Michael Kelly said in an email.

Anyone wishing to apply must meet one-year residency requirements for the ward they are applying for. Duties would include serving on at least two committees and attending scheduled and special council meetings as required.

“Candidates would then be interviewed by the mayor’s office for further consideration and eventual appointment,” Kelly said. “Ideally, appointments would happen in May, but state statute allows for up to 90 days after the seat is vacated to make an appointment should more time be required.”

In the 1st Ward, Alderman Ronald Burlingame is being challenged by Elizabeth “Lisa” Haderlein of the Land Conservancy of McHenry County.

In the 2nd Ward, Alderman Daniel Carncross is seeking a two-year term while Alderwoman Bona Heinsohn is seeking re-election for a four-year term.

Applications are available on the city's website and should be emailed to Harvard City Clerk Lori Moller at moller@cityofharvard.org.
