High school sports roundup: Lemont girls basketball wins three straight, Owen Ganzer sets pools record at Argo

After overtime loss, boys basketball tops Mt. Carmel at MLK shootout

LEMONT – Facing visiting South Suburban Conference foe Richards on Jan. 13, Lemont outscored the Bulldogs 26-13 in the second and third quarters on its way to a 46-28 win.

Lemont allowed just eight points in the second half as it improved to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Junior Emma Bozue paced Lemont with 12 points, and Sarah Knoepfle had a well-rounded outing with 11 points, six rebounds and five steals against Richards.

Claudia Sikora had 11 points in the Indians’ 47-26 win against Reavis on Jan. 14 as Lemont moved its record to 11-6 overall, 6-1 SSC. The Indians then defeated nonconference foe Willowbrook 43-30 on Jan. 17.

Lemont will host TF North at 7 p.m. Jan. 20.

Lemont boys swimming

Owen Ganzer had a swimming meet to remember on Jan. 10.

During Lemont’s 61-40 dual meet win at Argo, Ganzer set the pool record in the 50-yard freestyle as he won the race in 22.60 seconds.

Ganzer also won the 100 backstroke.

Ray Scribano (200 individual medley and 500 freestyle), Greg Zimkus (100 and 200 freestyles) and Peter Sniezko (100 butterfly) also were event champions.

Lemont defeated the Thornton Fractional co-op 111-57 on Jan. 17 as the Indians finished first in every contested event. Zimkus (50 and 100 freestyles), Ganzer (200 IM and 100 breaststroke) and Scribano (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) were double winners.

Isaiah Arabe won the 200 freestyle; Louka Ziogas won the 500 freestyle; and Sniezko, Paul Crandall, Gabe Potts, Ethan Potts, Andres De La Vega and River Calderon joined in on relay wins in the dual.

Lemont boys basketball

Facing host Richards in a South Suburban Conference game Jan. 13, Lemont’s boys basketball team went to overtime before falling 65-62 against the Bulldogs.

The Indians got back on track Jan. 16 with a 72-62 win against Mount Carmel at the Oswego MLK Day of Hoops shootout.

PJ Pipes poured in a game-high 27 points against Mount Carmel as Lemont improved to 10-8. The Indians hit the road to face Reavis at 7 p.m. Jan. 20.

Lemont boys bowling

Junior Patrick Kerrigan bowled a 1,165 series at the Oswego East regional tournament Jan. 14 to earn one of the 10 at-large individual berths in the Plainfield South sectional, which begins at 9 a.m. Jan. 21 at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet.

As a team, Lemont placed ninth at the regional with a 5,263 total.
