Glenbard Township High School District 87 Superintendent David Larson views the district's 100th anniversary as a way to celebrate the district's identity and the individual identity and personality of its four high schools.
Yearbooks, memorabilia and other items that tell the story of District 87 will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 26 at Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St., Lombard.
"Anytime you look at your history, you are constantly sharing stories," Larson said. "Your school district has kind of a narrative. And you share the history of the district by sharing stories. So it's always fun to celebrate by hearing stories."
What is now Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn opened in 1922. Prior to the opening of the school, students in Glen Ellyn previously attended the Glen Ellyn High School, which was located on the second floor of the DuPage Bank building. The school was founded in 1916.
Glenbard East opened its doors in September 1959, while Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream opened in 1968. Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn opened in 1972.
"It's fun for the students to become aware of the history of their building, when it opened and to hear stories of that era and meet alumni and staff," Larson said. "It's a good thing to have that sense of identity and history, and to be able to celebrate it."
And while much has changed over the years, Larson noted the district's commitment to providing students with the best education has not wavered.
"When graduates talk about their fond memories, they talk about the teachers they respected," Larson said. "While technology has changed and teaching practices have changed, Glenbard has been fortunate to have such a talented cadre of teachers through the years."
